shallot chutney

Description

Ingredients:

Shallots- cleaned        10 nos.

Channa Dal                2 tbsp

Red chillies                10 nos.(may vary depending on spice reqt.)

Tomatoes                    2 nos( vine ripened 1 is enough)

Asafoetida                1 small piece(we keep the katti kayam, dry roasted and broken to pieces) or 1 tsp

curry leaves                1 stem

coriander                    1 handful

salt                         to salt

oil                        to fry all the above ingredients

Method:

Heat 2 tbsp of oil, add channa dal, red chillies, asafoetida, curry leaves and once the dal fries add onion and cook for a while. then add tomatoes cubed and sprinkle salt, this fastens the tomatoes to cook fast. Add coriander leaves and keep it aside to cool down.

grind this to a fine or coarse paste as reqd. this is a fantastic and spicy combination for idli, dosa, adai etc.

you may use tamarind in the place of tomatoes for shelf life. you can store it in fridge.
