Green Peas stir fried with semi thick spicy tomato onion masala, perfect side for rice or chapati!
Pachai Pattani Masala – Fresh Green Peas cooked and stir fried with Onion, tomato and curry powder. This South Indian style green peas masala is one of the favorites at home to have with sambar or rasam rice.
WHICH GREEN PEAS TO USE?
Green Peas (Pisum sativum) is the main ingredient for this masala. You may use freshly shelled green peas, or go with quick frozen or the dried peas.
Frozen Green Peas – For a quick version, use frozen peas which takes very little time to cook or steam. They are blanched and quick frozen, partially cooked and hardly takes few minutes to turn tender and soft.
Freshly shelled peas are tender too and also takes just under 10 minutes to cook while dried peas takes prep work. Dried green peas needs to be soaked for at least 10 hours, then needs to be pressure cooked for 4 to 5 whistles. Here is a version of Pachai Pattani Kurma using dried green peas.
The first time I got to know about this recipe if through our home help Vasantha akka. Back in the 80’s, almost all my school days summer vacation was at my granny’s. Every Saturday this will be on the menu with mochai kara kuzhambu, vellai kootu kari, rasam, cutlet and appalam!
