Raita is simple condiment / side dish made with plain yogurt/curd, the best to go with any biryani or pulao. It has many variation, often seasoned with veggies, herbs and spices. The most simplest form is onion raita, we tamilians call it vengaya pachadi, a must in our home every sunday as a side dish for biryani. Today i will be sharing the recipe for onion raita recipe which is the easiest of all and requires only four basic ingredients …onion, curd, green chili and salt. The rest is optional but we at home add those to suit our taste, do give it a try!

Plain yogurt / curd / thayir / Dahi | 1 cup |
Onion | 1/2 cup (sliced) |
Tomato | 1/2 teaspoon (chopped) |
Green chili | 2 (chopped) |
Ginger | 1/2 teaspoon (finely minced) |
Coriander leaves | 1 teaspoons (finely chopped) |
Salt | 1/4 teaspoon |
Black pepper powder | a pinch |
Thinly slice onion lengthwise, separate the rings and take in a bowl. Mix it with a pinch of salt and set aside for 10 minutes. This is make the onion sweat and release liquid, which needs to be drained before adding it to the curd.
Whisk the curd with salt and pepper, add in the drained onion slices, chopped tomato, minced ginger, chopped green chili and coriander leaves. Give it quick mix and serve.
Notes
Serves 2-3 adults.
Try using fresh yogurt for sweet pachadi.
Adding tomato, black pepper and ginger is optional. Tomato gives nice color combo, pepper for heat and ginger for refreshing taste.
