Ingredients | |
---|---|
6 Idlis | Plain Idlis |
1 cup | Onion (chopped) |
1/2 cup | Tomato (chopped) |
1 inch piece | Ginger (crushed) |
4 cloves | Garlic (crushed) |
1 small | Green chili (minced) |
1/2 teaspoon | Cumin seeds |
1/4 teaspoon | Mustard seeds |
1/2 teaspoon | Fennel seeds |
1/4 teaspoon | Asafoetida powder |
10 leaves | Curry leaves (chopped) |
1/4 teaspoon | Split black gram |
1/4 teaspoon | Turmeric powder |
1/2 teaspoon | Red chili powder |
1 teaspoon | Coriander powder |
1/2 teaspoon | Black pepper powder |
1/4 teaspoon | Garam Masala powder (optional) |
3 teaspoon | Coriander leaves (chopped) |
4 teaspoons | Oil |
1/4 teaspoon | Salt(or to taste) (idli already has salt, so adjust accordingly) |
Roughly chop the idlis or cut them into big cubes. Some deep fry the idlis and then add to the masala but I prefer plain idlis tossed in masala. For the masala, heat oil in a kadai, splutter mustard, cumin, fennel, split black gram and curry leaves. Sprinkle asafoetida powder and then add chopped onions, green chilies, crushed ginger and garlic. Fry them till slightly browned. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until it mashes. Now add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, black pepper powder, garam masala powder and salt. (Remember: Idli already has salt in it, so add whats necessary for the masala)
Fry until the masala cooks(it should slightly on the drier side, add the ( crumbled idli or chopped idli pieces) and toss over medium flame until the masala coats well. Garnish with coriander leaves and switch off. Serve them hot or pack it for lunch. Great for kids evening snack, picnic parcels or any lunch box.
Notes
- Serves one Adult
- Garam masala is not really necessary, keep it optional. If you wish to have more flavor then include it.
- You may also add grated veggies to make it healthy.
- Add less spice powder if you are making it for kids lunch box.
- Cooked idlis already have salt so adjust accordingly.
- This recipe works well with both crumbly idlis or roughly chopped idlis (pic given above)
- Do not skip the fennel it gives nice flavor and crunch touch to the idlis!
