Kollu Rasam – Healthy Recipes – How to make Rasam

Kollu rasam – Horse Gram / Kollu seeds are generally known to us as cattle feed but its also good for our health. Great remedy for cold, cough and body aches. Good source of protein and iron. Most of all helps in loosing weight. Lets steal atleast few of those good qualities by including it in our diet atleast once a week. Rasam will be one good choice to start with when you introduce this legume to your family.

Some rasam recipes to try..

  1. Drumstick leaves rasam
  2. Sathamudhu
  3. Thengai Paal rasam
Ingredients
¼ cup Horse gram
1 cup Tomato (chopped)
3 cloves Garlic
1 teaspoon Black peppercorn
1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
2 long Dry red chili
½ teaspoon Mustard seeds
5 leaves Curry leaves
¼ teaspoon Asafoetida
¼ teaspoon Turmeric powder
2 teaspoon Salt (or to taste)
1 tablspoon Thick tamarind pulp ( 2 marble size)
3 cups Water
5 stalks Coriander leaves (chopped)
2 teaspoons Ghee or oil

Lets see how to make this kollu rasam…

Grab a pack of Kollu from your local Indian grocery store and soak them overnight in enough water.  Note: Kollu takes a long time to cook, so soaking for atleast 5 hours is a must.

Wash the soaked beans and pressure cook with 3 cups of water for upto 5 to 6 whistles. Once done, it will look like this, they never get mushy… the outer skin will be intact and when you press, it will soft on the inside.

Drain all the water and keep it ready for preparing rasam. Cooked beans can be used for making chutney or sundal.

Coarsely powder black pepper and cumin using mortar and pestle. Crush the garlic, chop the tomatoes, get the pulp by soaking the tamarind in little water and keep aside. Heat ghee in a sauce pan, splutter mustard seeds, add crushed black pepper, cumin, dry red chili and curry leaves. Sprinkle asafoetida and add the chopped tomatoes. Let them cook until soft and mushy. Now add the retained kollu water along with turmeric powder, tamarind pulp and salt. Add the coriander leaves and let the whole thing come to one boil. Switch off and serve hot with piping hot white rice and pappadam.

Now ! that’s one satisfying meal and any hungry tummy will appreciate such a treat on a cold wintry day.

Notes

  • Yield: About 3 cups of rasam.
  • Cooked Kollu / Horse gram can be used in different recipes, I usually put some tempering and make a sundal. You can make dhal or even a chutney. I will try my best to post those recipes soon.

    Hi Mullai,

Nice recipe, i tried your “CHICKEN KUZHAMBU (Muniyandi Vilas Style) ~ Nattu Kozhi Kuzhambu”, So tasty all my family members loved it. One small suggestion , without soaking also we can prepare the kollu by dry roasting it till black dotes come on it then pressure cook to 5 to 6 whistle comes, then prepare as usual.

Rasam looks Yum.. Yum.. we used to do it at home. We also make Kollu Kanji on weekends. It is simple and healthy. 1 cup – Kollu, 1 cup idli rice, salt to taste

    1. Soak the idli rice overnight in water. 2. Dry roast kollu slightly in an open pan. Remove from heat and let it cool completely. In a blender, using the pulse mode break the roasted kollu to coarse mode (don't make it too fine). 3.Add kollu, rice, salt and sufficient water to the pressure cooker and cook for 4 to 5 whistles. 4. Let it cool down.

Enjoy hot kanji with some Mango pickle or Lemon Pickle. One can change the rice to kollu proportion depending on their taste. (ie., Rice 1 cup , Kollu 1/2 cup)
