Description
Bisi Bele Bhath is the signature dish of Karnatak. A one dish meal easy to cook, very filling, and nutritious.

Rice – 1 cup Red gram(Thuvaraparippu) – 3/4 cup Onions(peeled) – 1 cup Potatoes(diced) – 1 cup Peas – 3/4 cup Tomatoes(Large) – 2 nos Tamarind juice – 2 tbsp Salt – As reqd Ghee – 3 tbsp Oil – 4 tbsp Bisibele bhath masala powder-2 tsp Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp Chilly powder – As reqd Chopped coriander leaves Fresh grated coconut |

3 cup | Red gram |
1 cup | Onions (chopped) |
1 cup | Potatoes(peeled & cut) |
3 cup | Peas |
2 nos | Tomatoes |
2 tsp | Tamarind juice |
Salt as required | |
3 tsp | Ghee |
4 tsp | Oil |
2 tsp | Bisibele masala powder |
1 T | Turmeric powder |
Chilly powder as required | |
Coriander leaves (chopped for garnishing) | |
Coconut grated |
Instructions
1)Cook diced potatoes (don`t overcook).
2)Pressure cook red gram/toor dhal by adding turmeric powder.
3)Cook rice separately and allow it to cool.
4)Soak tamarind in water for sometime and then extract the juice.
5)Heat oil in a pan.
6)Add little bisibele bhath masala powder.
7)Add onions and fry them till translucent.
8)Add tomatoes and cook for another 3 minutes.
9)Add peas, cooked potatoes and cooked dal.
10)Add remaining masala powder, tamarind juice and about 1 cup of water and bring it to boil.
11)Add salt and chilly powder as required.
12)While boiling, add cooked rice and simmer for another 5 minutes.
13)Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and fresh grated coconut.
14)Pour little ghee on top.
:- Serve hot.
Notes
For bisibele bhath masala powder:
Coriander seeds(Malli) – 2 tsp
Fenugreek(Uluva) – 1/4 tsp
Cinnamon(Karugapatta) – 1" piece
Cloves(Grambu) – 3 nos
Cardamom(Elakka) – 1 no
Red chillies(Kollamulaku) – As reqd
Grated dry coconut
Roast all the ingredients in little oil, till good smell comes. Add dry coconut and fry for another minute. Grind it and store in a air tight container.

Both are same.In hindi its called Toordal & Red gram is english.
