Description
Simple and quick lemon flavoured dal, a common lentil gravy served with rice loaded with melted ghee.

½ cup | Split red gram (toor gram / thuvaram paruppu) |
1 no | Lemon (small) |
2 nos | Green chili |
1 no | Dry red chili |
¼ tsp | Mustard |
¼ tsp | Cumin seeds |
1 tsp | Ginger (chopped) |
5 nos | Curry leaves |
¼ tsp | Asafoetida |
1 pinch | Turmeric powder |
1 tsp | Salt (or to taste) |
3 stks | Coriander leaves |
1 tsp | Ghee |
Instructions
Soak Toor dal (Thuvaram papruppu / Split red gram) for 30 minutes in enough water. Rinse and drain, in a pressure cooker add the toor dal with 2 cups of water, turmeric powder and cook for 2 whistles. When the steam releases, open carefully, add asafoetida powder and add the lemon juice (squeeze out of one small lemon) and salt. Mix well and keep aside. Now in a small pan, heat ghee(you can also use oil), splutter mustard, cumin seeds, dry red chili and green chilis along with ginger. Fry for few seconds and add this to the cooked dal along with chopped coriander leaves. Mix to combine and serve with rice or roti.
Notes
Yield; Serves 4 adults approx.
I've used one small lemon (not lime), ripe and sweet for my recipe..adjust the level of sourness depending on your taste.

You can even use Moong dal instead of toor dhal….tastes good as a side dish with poori

I usually prepare this lemon dal, But never tried with ginger as a seasoning. And I add green chilli’s directly in dal and pressure cook together. will try with ginger this time.Thank u.
