Description
Poli is a trditional sweet stuffed with channa dal and jaggery.
Ingredients | |
---|---|
1 cup | Maida |
5 pinch | Yellow food color |
2 tbsp | Ghee(for dough) |
5 pinch | Salt |
½ cup | Channa dhal |
¾ cup | Jaggery(powdered) |
2 tbsp | Grated coconut(fresh) |
2 no | Cardamom(powdered) |
Instructions
In a bowl add maida, yellow food color, ghee and salt. Add water little by little amd make a soft dough. Roll the dough between palms for 5 minutes to get soft dough. Pour 2 tsp oil on it and close with lid.Set aside for 3 hrs.
For stuffing(poornam):
Cook channa dhal in 1 cup of water for 2 whistles in pressure pan. After the steam is released strain the water thoroughly from channa dal and grind into powder.
Now in a kadai add channa dal powder and jaggery powder, heat in medium flame.Don't add water. When the jaggery melts and mixes with channa dal add coconut powder and cardamom powder, mix well. Remove from heat and let it cool.
For making poli:
After 3 hours the dough become very soft.
Take 1 gallon ziploc cover and apply some oil on it. Take a small ball from dough. Touch some ghee on the tip of the fingers and start to press the dough into a small circle(the size of your palm). Keep the poornam on the circular dough and fold it. Start pressing in the middle to stretch it out. Do the same procedure for the remaining balls.
Now heat the dosai pan and cook for 2 minutes each side. Remove and apply ghee. Serve hot or cold.
The outer layer will come thin like this.
Notes
A rolling pin is not need to stretch the dough with poornam. Your hands can very well make thin polis.
You can get 5 to 6 polis from 1 cup of flour.
Some times my mom makes thin maida dosa and stuff the poornam. It's another style of poli.

Hi Kaviarun,
Today I am going to prepare this poli. But I have a doubt . I have brought jaggery( Triangular shaped vellam) . So how do i cook the channa dal with vellam. Do i have to break it into pieces before mix it with channa dal in a pan or do i have to pour water and cook jaggery first and then add channa dal or do i have to cook the grinded channa dal with the jaggery (without breaking it) will it automaticaly dissolve/
Please clarify my doubt soon.
Hi visitor, i know i'm replying late, sorry somehow missed ur msg. Ya,if u have hammer break the vellam into powder. MIx ground channa dal powder and jaggery powder in kadai & heat in medium….pls. don't add water….jaggery melts in heat…we need thick poornam not watery….so that we have to add little coconut…
kavi
