Description
Hi all here is another mild dal variety which tastes yummy with white rice, rotis and parottas.This is made with ridgegourd in english, peerkangai in tamil, turai in hindi, beerakaya in telugu.This ridgegourd is cooked with dal.Hope u all will enjoy this dal variety.
Ingredients | |

½ cup | Toor dal |
1 | Ridge gourd peeled and chopped |
½ | Onion[medium sized finely chopped] |
2 | Tomatoes[medium sized chopped] |
2 | Green chilles[slit open] |
1 T | Mustard, fenugreek and cumin seeds |
pinch | Asafoetida |
pinch | Turmeric powder |
Salt and oil as per need | |
1 tsp | Ghee[optional] |
Few curry leaves | |
1 T | Tamarind paste |
3 clove | Garlic |
Instructions
1. Wash the dal and pressure cook dal with chopped ridge gourd, tomatoes, green chillies, garlic and turmeric.
2. Mash the cooked dal and ridgegourd well.
3.Take a pan add oil, mustard, cumin and fenugreek, curry leaves. Add asafoetida, onion, and saute well.
4.Now add the onion in the cooked mashed dal and add salt and tamarind paste and mix well and leave on stove in sim for 5 minutes and add ghee[optional].
Yummy beerakaya pappu is ready to be served.
Notes
I have used a mixture of toor dal and massoor dal, u can use either one of them or a mixture of both.

I make this dish with moong dal (the yellow color kind)instead. I feel that the vegetable has very subtle flavor, which gets dominated by the Toor Dal.
