Description
There are different ways of preparing this dish.Here is one way of preparation from my end.

2 nos | Cloves |
2 nos | Cinnamon stick |
5 nos | Red chilli |
2 T | Dry coconut/coprai thengai |
1 tsp | Urad dhal |
1 T | Channa dhal |
1 T | Poppy seeds |
2 T | Corriander seeds |

6 cup | Water |
2 tsp | Salt(or to taste) |
3 T | Ghee |
1 stks | Curry leaves |
3 stks | Coriander leaves (for garnishing) |
MarbleSz | Tamarind |
1 cup | Peas |
2 nos | Potato |
2 nos | Carrot |
2 nos | Onion (finely chopped) |
2 nos | Tomatoes (finely chopped) |
½ cup | Tur dhal |
1 cup | Raw rice |
¼ tsp | Turmeric powder |
¼ tsp | Asafoetida powder |
1 tsp | Oil (for sauteing) |
Instructions
1.Heat 1 tsp of oil and toss all the ingredients(except bay leaf) from table – 1 until they release aroma.Then add the dry coconut(Coprai thengai) and toss for a minute..Allow the mixture to cool and grind them to a fine powder.
2.Cut the assorted veggies lengthwise and keep aside. Assorted veggies like beans,capsicum,brinjal,cauliflower,potato,carrot,peas etc can be used.
3.Heat 2 T of ghee in a cooker and toss the bay leaf and curry leaves for a minute ,then add the chopped onions and fry until they turn to golden brown color.Then add the chopped tomatoes,assorted veggies, followed by turmeric powder,asafoetida,ground spices from table- 1 and salt and fry them for a while(say 10min) till the raw smell disappears .
4.Add the tamarind extract and stir the entire contents in the cooker .Add rice and dhal along with 6 cups of water .Check out for salt if required and pressure cook them for 4 whistles.Once the pressure is released,open the lid,stir the entire contents,heat a little ghee in a separate pan and fry the Cashewnuts until they turn golden brown in colour and add them to the rice.Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and add some ghee on top just before serving.
The above quantity is ideal for 4 people
This dish can be had along with pappad’s or potato chips.
Notes
1.Bisi Bele Bath should be prepared a bit watery as possible b’se it becomes thick once it cools down.
2.Sambhar Onions(Chinna Vengayam) are the ones that are normally used for this preparation, since i had not stocked them up I had to use the normal ones.If using small onions 15-20 numbers would be sufficient for this quantity.
3.Cashews and tomatoes are optional.I prefer to add tomatoes b’se it tastes good.
4.Dry coconut(Coprai Thengai)tastes good but if not readily available you can use fresh grated coconuts.I have used the fresh ones over here.
5.If you prefer to preserve the Bise Bele Bath powder, double or tripple the proportion of spices from table – 1 as per the quantity required and use only dry copra and not the fresh grated coconuts( fresh doesn’t last long).

I have a quick question…i saw lots of great comments for this recipe..but still i am keen in raising this doubt..ok let me come to the point..generally people wont add tamarind along with dal..the logic behind that is the dal wont get cooked when it gets mixed with tamarind right..but you had mentioned to add tamarind and dal together..r u sure its ok..tomorrow i have a potluck..i am gonna try this out..pls let me know ASAP..Thanks in advance and have a nice day-sandhya

Normally, when rice and dhal gets pressure cooked for 4-5 whistles they would get cooked infact smashed, very well..No issues at all.Till today I haven't faced any problem adding tamarind extract along with the dhal.If u r still bit hesitant u can very well soak dhal and rice for half an hr and then add them.All the best for ur venture.Hope ur pot luck dinner goes well.Pls do let me know the outcome.

There is absolutely no problem even if prepared wthout coconut.Guess what, actually I had not stocked up coprai,so landed up using fresh grated coconut.If u r planning to stock the powder then u should use coprai,if u r going to use it up then and there,then fresh coconut can very well be used.All the best and get back with ur results.Hope u like it!!!!!!

well it was in the midst of making bisi bele bath that i posted that question.[actually i was searching for poppy seeds in that pic n found cumin seeds]but then i made the dish as per u had written with out adding cumin seeds,n believe me it was perfect in everyway.thank you radha.

Dear Radha, i tried bisebelebath it really cameout well. First i hesitate to add cloves, cinnamon and bay leaves so i tried with 1 cup of rice and 1/2 cup of dal with all the ingredients. The taste was simply superb. Going to make for a potluck. Thanks for such a nice receipe.

Garam masala’s(Cloves,cinnamon,bay leaves etc)r normally added to increase the flavour of the dish..It’s basically individual’s preference.But certain dishes requires these stuffs to be added to it, without which u would feel something missing in it..Anyway’s happy to hear that u liked the taste without adding the Garam Masala’s..

I haven't used thick tamarind pulp so far ,so not really sure how sour it would taste.If u r planning to use tomatoes then I guess u can dilute 1tbsp of tamarind pulp with little qunatity of water and use the extract.To be on the safer side try adding little quantity and then if requried u can add the remaining before pressure cooking..

Happy to hear u liked the recipe and it came out well..U can very well store it and have the next day.Add a little quantity of water and salt(If required) ..stir the rice for the salt and water to mix evenly and reheat it and try to consume it immediately after reheating.Basically Bisi bele bath thickens up very soon..Can't help it..But adding water and reheating would help to some extent..Try it out.
